UK and France eye greater role in Ukraine security efforts

Speaking in Riyadh, U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz noted that both the United Kingdom and France are exploring ways to enhance their support for Ukraine’s security, describing it as a positive development. It was there that earlier talks took place between the United States and Russian delegations on ending the war in Ukraine.

Mike Waltz emphasised the need for European nations to share the responsibility of NATO defence more equally. He pointed out that many allies still fail to allocate at least two percent of their GDP to defence.

He pointed out that one of the important topics is the "security guarantees" being discussed in Europe.

U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz highlighted that an important issue is also increasing defence funds in European countries.

He emphasised that this is a collective effort rather than a matter of the U.S. dictating terms to European taxpayers. He also noted that both the UK and France are considering increasing their contributions to Ukraine’s security, describing it as a positive development.

Declaration of cooperation

Talks between the Russian and American delegations lasted over four hours and were the first since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov today as a follow up to President Donald Trump’s conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 12 (...) to reestablish the bilateral relationship - U.S. Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce reported on Tuesday.

The politicians also agreed to create a consultative mechanism to address sensitive issues in U.S.-Russian relations.

They also announced cooperation in the fields of economy and investment opportunities that will arise with the end of the war in Ukraine.
