U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov have agreed to create teams dedicated to working towards a swift end to Russia's war in Ukraine, informed Tammy Bruce, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, on Tuesday.

Declaration of cooperation

The politicians also agreed to establish a consultative mechanism to address "irritants" to U.S.-Russian relations.

One phone call followed by one meeting is not sufficient to establish enduring peace. We must take action, and today we took an important step forward, emphasized the spokesperson for the Department of State after Tuesday's talks between the U.S. and Russian delegations in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also agreed to collaborate on matters of shared geopolitical interest.

The politicians also agreed to collaborate in economic and investment opportunities that will arise with the end of the war in Ukraine.

First talks since the invasion of Ukraine

The discussions between the Russian and American delegations lasted over four hours and marked the first since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"There was a very serious conversation on all the issues we wanted to raise," said Russian representative Yuri Ushakov. He added that it is unlikely that a meeting between Putin and Trump will take place next week.
