Iran on edge: Fears of Russian-American deal jeopardizing ties
The Iranian newspaper "Jomhouri-e Eslami" warns that Russia may sacrifice Iran for a deal with the USA regarding Ukraine.
The newspaper points out that Russia did not support Iranian forces in Syria and also cooperated with the USA and Israel against Bashar al-Assad. "Jomhouri-e Eslami" cautions that Moscow may betray Iran again if Washington assists it in Ukraine. The newspaper urges Iranian authorities to remain vigilant and to develop a strategy in case of an American-Russian agreement.
"Iran will be drawn into this equation alongside Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Palestine… and Russia will turn a blind eye to any actions the United States may take against Iran," claims "Jomhouri-e Eslami" in an article widely commented upon by other national media, titled "Us and the Great Moscow-Washington Deal."
Similar concerns are echoed by the newspaper "Shargh," which questions if Tehran will be sacrificed as part of a deal between Putin and Trump. "Shargh" suggests that Iran should consider direct negotiations with the USA regarding its nuclear program.
Iran in the face of international tensions
The portal Iran International notes that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov is attempting to reassure Iran, stating that the American-Russian talks will not affect Moscow's relations with Tehran. Despite this, Iran is concerned that Russia and China may not provide sufficient assistance in the face of sanctions imposed by the USA in 2018.
