According to NBC News, Ukrainian officials were concerned about the threat of cancellation of meetings with U.S. representatives if specific demands were not met.

The Ukrainians feared conflicting signals regarding the possibility of joining NATO. Moreover, U.S. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth suggested in a closed meeting that the U.S. might withdraw some troops from Europe, further alarming Kyiv.

U.S. President Donald Trump accused Ukraine of escalating the conflict with Russia, which prompted a response from Volodymyr Zelensky, who accused Trump of spreading Russian disinformation. Since then, Trump has attacked the President of Ukraine at almost every opportunity, calling him a "dictator."

The source of tensions in resources

Trump accused Zelensky of breaking an agreement that was supposed to grant the United States a 50% share of the revenues from rare earth metals as compensation for previous aid. Zelensky refused to sign the document presented by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The situation is dynamic, and many American politicians, including Senator Thom Tillis, have expressed concerns that the conflict between Trump and Zelensky could work to Russia's advantage. Discussions are ongoing in Washington regarding the strategy towards Ukraine and Russia.
