Rescue services have reported that the number of fatalities from the violent floods in Spain has risen to 95. In the region most affected by the disaster, Valencia, 92 people have perished. Two other individuals passed away in the region of Castilla-La Mancha. Another victim of the flooding in Andalusia succumbed in hospital.
Violent storms and floods striking eastern Spain are caused by an atmospheric phenomenon known as DANA (Spanish: depresión aislada en niveles altos, or isolated depression at high levels) or "cold drop." This phenomenon occurs when cold air masses meet warm, moist air from the Mediterranean, leading to atmospheric instability.
DANA is characterized by a mass of cold air that becomes isolated from the original air stream. It rises at lower levels, eventually causing extreme weather conditions like storms, tornadoes, or floods.
Wednesday brought additional challenges as storms struck the northeastern and southern parts of the country. Red weather alerts, signifying the highest level of threat, have been issued in Catalonia and Cádiz in Andalusia.
In the province of Valencia, intense rescue operations involving the military are underway. Unfortunately, the number of victims may increase as many people are still missing. In response to this tragedy, the Spanish government has declared a three-day national mourning period starting on Thursday.
According to Reuters, this is the deadliest flood in Spain since 1996. The situation in the region is extremely serious, and services urge residents to remain cautious.
