Their unusual appearance is not always just a matter of aesthetics. Often, visible abnormalities on the feet may indicate health problems and even suggest the presence of cancer. Which symptoms should you pay special attention to?

Clubbing of fingers and nails is one of the more characteristic symptoms that can appear on both hands and feet. Thickening and rounding of the fingertips, as well as nail thickening become noticeably convex. This is often associated with a lack of oxygen in the blood, which can result from chronic diseases, including lung or stomach cancer.

For some people with lung cancer, swelling in the feet may occur, caused by fluid retention in the body. This swelling can be painful and lead to difficulties in movement. Additionally, neuropathy, which is nerve damage, can be one of the symptoms of advanced lung cancer. It can lead to numbness, tingling, or pain in the feet.

Furthermore, if you notice that your nails are becoming yellowish, this can be a sign of health issues, including potentially cancerous ones.

Changes in feet that should raise a red flag

Feet can also reflect peripheral artery disease. In this case, noticeable hair loss on the toes and tops of the feet may occur. The so-called bald toes, according to specialists from the Mayo Clinic, are a warning signal that should be consulted with a doctor.

Feet can also reveal symptoms of diabetes. Hard-to-heal wounds, abrasions, or cuts, as well as ulcers, should concern us, as they are the most common symptoms of the so-called diabetic foot. They should not be ignored because, in the case of diabetes, even an innocent wound can lead to an infection, and consequently, may require the amputation of a toe or the entire foot.

Another symptom of diabetes can be a weakened sense of pain. This is due to poor blood circulation and damage to peripheral nerves.

Strong pain and accompanying swelling of the big toe are the most common symptoms of gout. However, a sudden change in the shape of the foot can indicate a stroke or spinal cord tumour.

Feet can also reveal thyroid problems. Attention should be paid to dry, flaky skin and thickening. In this case, it is worth consulting an endocrinologist, who may order appropriate tests to check whether your hormonal system is functioning properly.

If you notice vertical red lines on your feet, specifically under your nails, and you have not experienced any mechanical injury, it may be a sign of lupus or myocarditis. Lupus can also change the appearance of nails, which become spoon-shaped. A similar symptom can occur in the case of anemia.

If you notice any of these symptoms, a doctor's visit is necessary. Remember that early diagnosis is key to effective treatment.
