General Motors announces temporary layoffs at Kansas plant
The situation in the automotive industry is challenging. This is evident in Europe and the United States, where further layoff decisions have just been made.
General Motors will temporarily lay off 1,695 employees at the Fairfax plant in Kansas, according to a statement released last week. The company's spokesperson confirmed the decision in a conversation with "Reuters," adding that the reductions will be conducted in two stages.
The first stage will begin on November 18 at 11:00 AM Eastern Time. GM will part ways with 686 full-time employees and 250 temporary workers at that time. The second wave of layoffs will commence on January 12, 2025, at 11:00 AM Eastern Time and involve 759 positions.
In May 2024, GM announced that at the beginning of 2025, it would halt production of the Cadillac XT4 at the Fairfax plant. The facility will be modernized and adapted to manufacture the new electric Chevrolet Bolt. The company will spend approximately CAD 527 million on this project, and most employees will return to their positions after a long break.
However, 1,000 people laid off from the services and software departments in August will not get such a chance. GM parted ways with them for good.
