UN report condemns Israel for decimating Gaza healthcare
The UN Human Rights Office has accused the Israeli army of destroying the healthcare system in the Gaza Strip. According to the report, Israeli military actions from October 2023 to June 2024 led to the deaths of numerous patients and medical staff.
In a 23-page report, the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR) stated that as a result of the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip during that period, local healthcare was destroyed, and many patients, medical staff members, and civilian residents of the enclave were killed.
The UN report documents at least 136 attacks on 27 out of 38 hospitals in the Gaza Strip and 12 other medical facilities. UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk emphasized that the protection of hospitals is crucial and must be respected by all parties in the conflict.
Consequences of the military campaign
Israel rejects the accusations of violating international law, claiming that it warns civilians before attacking Hamas-related facilities. The Israeli army accuses Hamas of using hospitals as command centres.
According to Palestinian authorities, the Israeli military campaign resulted in the deaths of over 45,500 Palestinians, and at least 108,000 were injured. The campaign was in response to a Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023, in which 1,200 people were killed and more than 250 were abducted.
