Ukraine's low‑cost Trembita missile aims to tip war balance
The Ukrainian armed forces are testing a modern missile named Trembita. This missile has a range of about 150 kilometres and carries a payload of 20 kilograms. A major advantage of the missile is its cost. Preliminary reports indicate that it costs $10,000 CAD.
The Ukrainian army is attempting to repel the attack from Russia and shift the balance of victory in their favour. To change the situation in Donbas, the Ukrainians must possess modern weaponry capable of significantly striking enemy forces.
Currently, Ukraine is testing a missile named Trembita. It's a short-range missile designed in 2023. While its range is only 150 kilometres, and the payload is just 20 kilograms, the missile's biggest advantage is its production cost.
British "The Telegraph" reports that the cost of producing one Trembita is just $10,000 CAD. Why such a low cost? The design utilizes a jet engine and a simple GPS-guided fuselage.
Ukrainian designers are simultaneously working on another version of the missile. This version is intended to reach Moscow. The production cost will certainly be higher than $10,000 but lower than the price of modern American equipment. For comparison, "The Telegraph" reports that the American missile system MGM-140 ATACMS costs over $1 million CAD.
Ukraine wants mass-produced weapons. This is a response to voices from the USA
The authorities in Kyiv aim to address the dwindling aid from the West. Ukraine fears that Donald Trump may not supply the army with equipment, which could hinder their ability to fight against the Russians. Kyiv wants to become independent from Western supplies, and mass missile production combined with numerous attacks on Russia may be the only way to counter Putin's regime.
Although the project significantly differs in capabilities from the best missiles in the world, it offers the advantage of potential mass production. Such a solution could certainly inflict significant damage on Russia.
