Swedish CV90s bolster Ukrainian defences with advanced tech
A video has emerged on social media showing the 21st Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Army's exercises. These exercises employed Swedish CV90 (Stridsfordon 90) infantry fighting vehicles, which Ukrainian soldiers highly praise.
The footage, displaying a brief segment of the 21st Mechanized Brigade's exercises, was shared on the X service via the official account of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense.
CV90 in Ukraine
The Defence Express portal reports that during the exercises, Ukrainians are "actively enhancing their combat capabilities by utilizing advanced CV90 infantry fighting vehicles delivered by Sweden." The training mainly focused on refining rapid deployment and targeting skills to ensure the readiness of CV90 crews for effective action in various combat scenarios, including high-intensity clashes.
In discussions with media outlets, Ukrainian soldiers using the CV90s highlight that these are the most advanced vehicles they have received as part of Western support. They stand out in terms of mobility, firepower, and crew safety.
Military gold from Sweden in Ukraine
Depending on the equipment, the CV90 weighs from 20,000 kg to even 38,000 kg. Heavier variants of the Strf 9040C, featuring additional armour and enhanced optics, have been deployed in Ukraine. Ukrainian soldiers can also use the dedicated Barracuda camouflage, which reduces the vehicle's thermal signature and makes it harder to detect through enemy observation systems.
The offensive capabilities of the CV90s sent to Ukraine are provided by their turret, equipped with a Bofors 40 mm cannon, allowing the use of various types of ammunition. The propulsion of these Swedish vehicles consists of Scania engines, enabling them to reach speeds of up to 70 km/h on roads and about 45 km/h off-road.
The Ukrainians have been eager to receive as many of these Swedish vehicles as possible. They succeeded in this ambition; last year, an agreement was announced between Stockholm and Kyiv, leading to additional CV90s being sent to Ukraine. Some of these are expected to be the latest CV9035 MkIIIC with 35 mm Bushmaster III cannons.
