The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that the attack on the fuel depot in the Smolensk region of Russia took place on Tuesday. The depot in Yartsevo, situated about 60 kilometres from Smolensk, was used to supply the Russian armed forces.

Oil product tanks caught fire

The Ukrainian Special Operations Forces, in collaboration with the Unmanned Systems Forces, executed the attack. This led to an explosion and a fire, producing heavy smoke. According to the General Staff, tanks containing oil products caught fire.

Previously, Russian media reported that Ukrainian drones targeted the depot in the Yartsevo area. The Ukrainian General Staff confirmed these reports, highlighting the depot's significance for the Russian military forces.

Reuters first reported the incident, noting that a Ukrainian drone attack on Tuesday caused a fuel leak and a fire at a fuel depot in Russia's Smolensk region, according to statements from the regional governor, Vasily Anokhin.

"According to preliminary information, fragments of one of the drones landed on the fuel storage area. Consequently, there was a fuel leak and a fire involving fuels and lubricants," Anokhin reported on Telegram.
