Ukraine's foreign minister resigns amid government shakeup
Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba has resigned, reports Reuters, citing Ukrainian authorities. Kuleba has served as Ukraine's Foreign Minister since 2020.
Dmytro Kuleba submitted his resignation to the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada. The speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, Ruslan Stefanchuk, said his resignation will be considered at one of the upcoming sessions.
Dmytro Kuleba is 43 years old. He has been the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine since 2020, making him the youngest foreign minister in the country’s history.
Wave of resignations in the Ukrainian government
Dmytro Kuleba's resignation is not the only change in the Ukrainian government. Recently, Oleksandr Kamyshin, the Minister of Strategic Industries responsible for the defence industry, also resigned.
Four more ministers have declared their intention to leave the government.
Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olha Stefanishyna, responsible for integration with the European Union, the ministers of justice and environment, and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for the Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine Iryna Vereshchuk, are also stepping down.
Half of the government to be replaced?
Zelensky's party deputy, David Arachmia, announced a "major government reset." He believes more than half of the Ukrainian government might be replaced. According to his announcement, the resignations will be disclosed today, and the new appointments will be made on Thursday.
There are also speculations that some dismissed ministers will not wholly disappear from politics and might return to the government in new roles. Reuters mentioned, among others, Kamyshin, who is expected to remain in the defence sector but in a different position. As part of the government restructuring, there is also talk about merging specific ministries.
