U.S. sanctions target Russian and Iranian election meddling
The United States has imposed sanctions on Russian and Iranian entities for interfering in the 2024 elections and spreading disinformation. The sanctions target the Russian GRU and Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
The U.S. administration announced sanctions against Russian and Iranian entities for meddling in the 2024 elections and attempts to incite conflicts. The sanctions include the Geopolitical Expertise Center, which is associated with the Russian GRU, and Iran's Cognitive Design Production Center.
Russia and Iran allegedly spread disinformation
According to the U.S. Treasury Department, the Geopolitical Expertise Center, founded by Alexander Dugin, generated disinformation content using artificial intelligence. These actions aimed to spread false information across a network of websites swiftly.
The activities of the Iranian centre aimed to provoke conflicts among American voters.
In a separate action, President Joe Biden's administration also imposed sanctions on Russian judge Olesya Mendeleeva for sentencing Moscow councillor and human rights defender Alexei Gorinov for his statement opposing the invasion of Ukraine. Sentenced to seven years in prison, this individual was among the first opponents of the war to face such a sentence.
