A German politician was stabbed in Mannheim a few days after a police officer was killed in the city, attacked by a knife-wielder during an anti-Islam rally. On Tuesday evening, Heinrich Koch, a member of the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD), was injured in the ear and abdomen.

The district association of the Alternative for Germany reported that the incident occurred near the city market late Tuesday evening, just before 11:00 PM. According to Bild, 62-year-old Heinrich Koch was attacked by three individuals.

He encountered a person who was taking down campaign posters of his party. The politician was then stabbed in the ear and abdomen.

According to Bild, Koch himself recorded a video of the crime. "It shows him running after a younger man and shouting, 'Stop.' The fleeing man is carrying several AfD campaign posters and likely has a knife in his hand. A fight then ensues," the newspaper portal reports.

The politician is still in the hospital, but his injuries are not serious. The AfD claims that left-wing extremists are responsible for the attack, but this has not been confirmed yet - writes dpa.

As reported by The Sun, one of the suspects was arrested Tuesday evening, and reports indicate a manhunt is underway for the other two.

- We are shocked and dismayed - said AfD state chairman Markus Frohnmaier.

Koch was attacked in the same square where, on Friday, a police officer was stabbed. The officer died from his injuries.

This is another knife attack that has occurred recently in Mannheim. On Friday, a knife-wielder injured six people in the city center during an event organized by the Islam-critical movement Pax Europa. Among the wounded was an intervening police officer, who died Sunday from his injuries.

The perpetrator of the attack was a 25-year-old Afghan man who came to Germany in 2014. After the attack, he was shot by police and is currently hospitalized.
