The attack occurred on Sunday, before 6:00 PM, in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan.
According to the New York Post, a 24-year-old man injured three people. The 38-year-old stabbed in the neck died, and a 51-year-old woman wounded in the leg was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition. A 32-year-old man was also injured, but his condition is stable.
Police arrested the attacker and secured the crime weapon - a "cutting tool."
Dangerous neighbourhood. "We need police here"
According to the ABC New York portal, this part of the city has a bad reputation. It is full of drug dealers and criminals. Since the pandemic, there have also been more homeless people occupying the sidewalks.
"We need cops here. Like there are sirens all the time in New York City and they need to be here, and they should have been here," says one of the residents in an interview with the station.
"So it takes an innocent New Yorker to get injured or, god forbid, killed in broad daylight in an open street for you to toughen up or like tighten the screws?" asks another interviewee.
A broad daylight murder. The victim and attacker were neighbours
According to media reports, the victim was a musician, Johnny Medina. He and the attacker knew each other and lived on opposite sides of the street. ABC New York, citing an interview with the deceased's close ones and police sources, claims that this wasn't the first time the men argued. Additionally, some time ago, Medina went to the police station, claiming that the 24-year-old was harassing him.
A moment before the attack, the men argued. Then, the younger one pulled out a sharp tool and stabbed the other several times.
The exact motives for this attack are not yet known. It's also unclear what charges the 24-year-old will face.
