EU leaders pledge stronger defence funding amid U.S. tensions
Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasised that all EU countries are ready to accelerate actions on increasing defense funding. On Monday, an informal summit of EU leaders dedicated to security issues took place in Brussels. The President of the European Commission indicated that the Union is open to dialogue with the USA but will not be intimidated by Donald Trump's administration.
Capabilities, funds, and partnership - those were the priorities Antonio Costa spoke about, summarising the informal summit held in Brussels.
The President of the European Council noted that the leaders present at the meeting agreed that there is a need to ensure "even greater defence funding" in Europe.
Costa stressed that it is in Europe's interest to continue supporting Ukraine in its fight.
We will respond firmly to the U.S
The President of the European Council emphasized that the United States remains a friend and partner, and this relationship will endure. While acknowledging the existence of challenges and differing perspectives, he stressed the need to address them through dialogue and solutions while firmly upholding European values and interests.
The President of the European Commission also addressed this issue.
Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged the high stakes involved, stating that the EU has engaged in discussions on pragmatic cooperation with the U.S. She emphasized that the Union is prepared to engage constructively with the Trump administration but will respond firmly to any unfair actions. She also expressed concern over Trump’s decisions regarding Mexico and Canada, viewing them as unfavorable.
She also indicated that defence spending must increase.
The President of the European Commission highlighted that this would lead to an increase in public spending.
According to von der Leyen, a chance for joint defence development lies in cooperation with Ukraine's defence industry.
The heads of state and government of the "twenty-seven" met on Monday at an informal meeting in Brussels to seek funding for defence financing.
Von der Leyen also announced an EU-UK summit dedicated to defence, which is to be held in the UK in May.
