Citrus secret: Nobiletin's year-round health benefits

Citrus fruits are often associated with holidays. While they can be enjoyed all year round, they are most delectable from late autumn to spring. They are well-known for their high vitamin C content. Recent scientific studies reveal that these fruits offer other significant benefits as well.

Oranges have long been valued in our diets during the autumn and winter months because of their vitamin C content. This vitamin plays a vital role in boosting immunity, which is particularly important during these seasons when we are keen on preventing infections. It now appears that these fruits can also assist with other health issues.

They help in the fight against excess weight

Canadian scientists have become interested in a specific component of oranges called nobiletin. A study conducted at Western University in Ontario on mice showed that this substance leads to less weight gain. When included in the diet, it also reduces the tendency towards insulin resistance and cholesterol levels. Furthermore, under the influence of nobiletin, weight loss occurs more rapidly.

Best throughout the year

This enables researchers to conclude that nobiletin might support the battle against obesity and diabetes, although they are not entirely certain about the mechanism of its action. One theory suggests that nobiletin affects the regulation of appetite and fat metabolism. According to scientists, nobiletin also decreases the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries, thereby offering protection against atherosclerosis and its consequences, such as heart attacks or strokes. This substance also possesses anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. What do the experts recommend? It's beneficial to consume citrus fruits not only during the autumn and winter months but consistently throughout the year.
