The incident occurred as part of planned manoeuvres. The American B-52 bombers were in the region due to exercises with Finland, which became a NATO member in 2023.
The aim of the joint manoeuvres with Finnish F/A-18C fighters was to enhance Finland's defensive capabilities. The exercises took place in Finnish airspace, as confirmed by the Finnish Air Force in a conversation with Reuters.
Russian Su-27 fighters intercepted the B-52 bombers a few days after Russia used a tested ballistic missile against Ukraine. The American station "Voice of America" noted this situation, highlighting the increasing tensions in the region.
A White House representative stated that the bombers did not alter their designated flight path during the interception. The incident was deemed safe and professional, posing no threat to either side.
Finland did not officially comment on the Russian fighters' interception of the American bombers. However, the Finnish Air Force emphasized that cooperation with the USA aims to increase the country's security and defence capabilities.
