Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that next May he will travel to Moscow for the Victory Day celebrations.
"It is natural that as the Prime Minister of Slovakia I am very interested in participating in the official celebrations of the victory over fascism, which will take place on May 9, 2025 in Moscow. Therefore, I gladly accepted the official invitation of the President of the Russian Federation. Vladimir Putin will take part in these important celebrations, which I will do," Fico wrote on his social media profile.
Legacy of the fight against fascism
Fico emphasized that the Slovak government values the legacy of fighting against fascism and acknowledges the historical truth about World War II. "The Slovak government values the legacy of the fight against fascism, the historical truth about World War II and the role played by the Red Army in it. That is why the Slovak government will organize a number of events in 2025, the most important of which will be the celebration of the victory over fascism in May," the Prime Minister added.
Reuters notes that Fico's government has stopped military equipment supplies to Kyiv while allowing the continuation of commercial sales. The Prime Minister argued that arms supplies prolong the war in Ukraine. Fico's stance on the war aligns with that of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who met with Vladimir Putin in July. Both leaders hold views that differ from the official position of the European Union, which aims to isolate Moscow.
