Zelensky weighs Macron's plan for Western troops in Ukraine
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that his country is considering French President Emmanuel Macron's proposal regarding the potential deployment of Western troops to Ukraine. Macron suggested that such a possibility should not be ruled out in the future to ensure Ukraine's security.
Zelensky addressed this issue during a meeting with the German chancellor candidate, CDU leader Friedrich Merz. He emphasized that Ukraine needs security guarantees, especially during the period when it is not yet a NATO member.
- Even if we get invited (to NATO), what happens then? Who guarantees our security? We can think about that and work on Emmanuel Macron’s proposal - wrote Zelensky on social media.
The Ukrainian president reminded that Macron proposed that a portion of the troops from one country or another be present on Ukrainian territory to guarantee its security when it is not yet in NATO.
- But before that, we must have a clear understanding of when Ukraine will join the EU and when it will become part of NATO – emphasized Zelensky.
Macron's idea
At the end of February, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that defeating Russia is essential to ensuring European security. He added that the deployment of Western ground forces to Ukraine cannot be ruled out in the future.
Macron proposed that a portion of troops from various countries be present on Ukrainian territory to guarantee its security in the transitional period, i.e., before joining the Alliance.
