Why flight attendants really greet you: The security strategy behind smiles

Have you ever wondered why the cabin crew greets each passenger so warmly upon boarding a plane? A flight attendant who eagerly shares insights about her work on social media revealed the true reasons behind this procedure. For some, they may be surprising.

The airline employee explained why the airplane crew always individually welcomes passengers at the entrance. The reason is more complex than it might seem.

Flight attendant Rania, known on TikTok as @itsmekikooooo, disclosed that welcoming passengers is not just out of courtesy.

"Your flight attendant greets you, not only out of politeness but also to check whether you are too drunk or sick to fly," she explained.

Additionally, the crew observes passengers to assess who might be helpful in an emergency situation during the flight.

Identifying aggressive passengers

The purpose of the greeting is also to identify passengers who might potentially cause problems during the trip because of aggressive behaviour or provocative conduct. Such individuals can pose a threat to flight safety, and therefore - in the case of evident risk - the crew may intervene before takeoff.

Internet users quickly shared their insights. One user wrote, "I had pancreatitis when I was in Corfu, I acted normal going on to the plane otherwise I knew they wouldn't let me on."

Selecting "helpers"

Another online commenter, a flight attendant, added: "We look for anyone who hasn’t got any mobility issues, can speak English, looks like they will be able to open a door and ideally travelling alone."

As you can see, the greeting by the cabin crew has a much deeper meaning than just a kind gesture.
