Something extraordinary happened during the final day of the surfing competition at the Olympic Games in Paris. Fans and participants witnessed a whale emerging from the water, instantly stealing the show.

The competition occurred on the waters of Tahiti, and spectators were focused on the semifinal match between Tatiana Weston-Webb from Brazil and Brisa Hennessy from Costa Rica. During this intense moment, an enormous whale emerged from the water.

The sight delighted the on-site spectators and photographers, earning the title of the "Olympic moment of a lifetime."

While the presence of wild animals during surfing competitions is not unusual, with surfers encountering birds, seals, and even sharks, a whale appearing during such a prestigious event is a rare occurrence that will remain in spectators' memories for a long time.

Encounter with nature

Tahiti, where the Olympic surfing competitions were held, is approximately 16,000 kilometres from Paris. The island is renowned for gathering whales during the mating, birthing, and migration season. Tahiti also boasts several protected marine areas, helping maintain biodiversity and preserve these majestic mammals.

In April of this year, leaders of Indigenous communities across the Pacific, including from Tahiti, signed a treaty recognizing whales as "legal persons." Although this declaration is not yet reflected in the legislation of participating countries, it is an essential step toward protecting these animals.
