Trump threatens China with hefty tariffs over Taiwan conflict
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has announced that he would impose additional tariffs on China if they invaded Taiwan, Reuters reported, citing the New York newspaper "Wall Street Journal."
Donald Trump, the Republican Party's presidential candidate, is once again threatening tariffs. After claiming at the end of September that he would halt Russia's invasion of Ukraine with just a threat, it's now China's turn.
I would say [China]: If you go into Taiwan, I'm sorry to do this, I'm going to tax you, at 150% to 200%, the newspaper quotes the former US president.
When questioned if he would use military force in the event of a Chinese blockade of Taiwan, Trump argued that it would not happen. He explained that Chinese President Xi Jinping has "very strong relationship" with him and respects him.
China sees Taiwan as a "rebellious province"
According to China, the democratically governed Taiwan is their territory, referred to as a "rebellious province." Taiwan strongly opposes these claims.
During the election campaign, Trump proposed introducing tariffs of 10 to 20 percent on virtually all imports and 60 percent or more on goods from China. In his opinion, this would increase production in America.
During his presidency, Donald Trump pursued an aggressive policy toward China, plunging both countries into a trade war.
