Trump suggests military action to control Panama Canal, Greenland
President-elect Donald Trump did not rule out military intervention in the Panama Canal and Greenland. He stated his desire for both areas to be under United States control.
"We need them for economic security," the future US president told journalists. He acknowledged that he would not rule out military action but also said that circumstances might arise where such measures would be necessary.
Donald Trump's son visited the island earlier. "Greenland is beautiful," he wrote on the X portal. As Greenlandic and Danish media have previously reported, Trump Jr. is planning talks with Erik Jensen, the leader of the influential social-democratic Siumut party. This politician officially invited Donald Trump to visit the island in late December of last year.
The Prime Minister of Greenland, Mute Egede, cancelled the planned visit to Copenhagen on Wednesday, where he was to be received by King Frederick X of Denmark.
A commentator from the Danish newspaper Berlingske described Trump Jr.'s visit to Greenland as a significant embarrassment for the Danish government. Bent Winther stressed that, despite being a private trip by the president-elect's son, the intention behind the visit was clear to everyone.
He reminded readers that Denmark is responsible for Greenland's foreign and security policies.
In late December, Donald Trump appointed billionaire Ken Howery, a collaborator of Elon Musk, as ambassador to Copenhagen. He emphasized the importance of securing control over Greenland, describing it as essential for national security and global freedom.
At the same time, just before Donald Trump's conference, Musk wrote on the X portal that "if the people of Greenland want to be part of America," he hopes "they would be most welcome."
On Wednesday, December 25th, Trump claimed that the people of Greenland wish for their island to be annexed by the United States and suggested that Canadians could reduce their taxes by 60% if their country became a U.S. state.
Trump extended Christmas greetings to the people of Greenland, highlighting its importance to the United States for national security reasons. He also claimed that Greenland's residents want a U.S. presence there and said it would happen.
This was another post on this topic following Trump's announcement of a candidate for ambassador to Denmark and his statement that the USA must "possess" the largest island in the world. Despite Trump's claims, the Prime Minister of Greenland stated that the country has no intention of annexing the island to the USA.
