Flaxseed is a small, brown seed that appears unassuming but has numerous benefits. Women over 50 particularly appreciate it because it helps alleviate menopause symptoms. Flaxseed is rich in lignans, plant estrogens, and also contains plenty of omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties. This is just the beginning of its beneficial properties.

Flaxseed aids digestion

Flaxseed is a good source of fibre. It helps regulate the digestive system, lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, and provide a long-lasting feeling of fullness. Additionally, flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids, which are essential for the proper functioning of the body. They influence the brain and circulatory system, reducing the risk of heart disease and cancer. Flaxseed is also rich in many vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin B, magnesium, potassium, calcium, iron, and zinc. These nutrients support health on many levels—from better skin condition to improved metabolism.

How to consume flaxseed?

Raw or brewed, whole or ground—there are many questions regarding flaxseed. Each method has its advantages. We best absorb the seeds when they are ground. Grinding should occur just before consumption as the fats contained in the seeds evaporate quickly and lose much of their properties. Another important issue is that ground flaxseed should be consumed raw; they should not be mixed with boiling water or cooked in this form. Adding it to a salad, sandwich, or smoothie is best.

Another popular way to consume flaxseed is to prepare a porridge. You just need to pour warm water over the seeds (ideally at room temperature). In this case, the seeds do not need to be ground because the mucilage is in the outer layer and easily transfers to the water. Drinking the porridge with the seeds is good, chewing them well to absorb as many nutrients as possible.

Does the time of day matter?

Flaxseed can be consumed both in the morning and evening, as these seeds beneficially affect the body's functioning regardless of the timing. However, there are specific instances when timing is important. Morning doses of flaxseed are recommended for stomach ailments. Consuming seeds on an empty stomach will soothe heartburn, hyperacidity, and stomach pain, and also provide a feeling of fullness.

Flaxseed in the evening is suitable for nighttime snacking issues. It is also a good time to aid digestion. Flaxseed contains tryptophan, which is essential for healthy sleep.
