Despite Rudakubana’s young age, Judge Andrew Menary KC decided to reject the accused's anonymity to prevent the spread of misinformation.
This is an extraordinary step, considering that Rudakubana is only 17 years old. However, the judge deemed that full disclosure is necessary in light of the accused's upcoming 18th birthday.
The teenager, born in Cardiff to a family from Rwanda, was transported to a detention centre. The trial in his case will begin in January next year (Eastern Time).
