Some dogs safer sleeping solo: Expert advice on bed sharing
Many people believe that it is common for a dog to sleep with its owner in bed. However, it's essential to consider the potential consequences of this decision. For safety reasons, some dog breeds should avoid sleeping in the same place as humans.
Dog owners are divided into two groups. Some, without hesitation, allow their beloved pets to sleep with them. Others, however, are opposed to this practice. What's most important is to make a conscious choice, guided by several crucial criteria. For some dog breeds, it is better for them to sleep in their own beds.
These dog breeds should not sleep with the owner
According to "World of Animals," Dr. Katy Alexander from the UK's Blue Cross advises that some dogs should not share a bed with their owners for their safety. The veterinarian especially recommends this for owners of small dogs, puppies, and animals that have difficulty moving.
As Dr. Katy Alexander explains, there is a risk of suffocation or inability to leave the bed if the animal becomes too hot. To minimize the risk of overheating, it's advisable to teach the dog to avoid going under the covers.
It's worth remembering
If we decide to let a dog sleep in our bed, certain rules must be followed to ensure it is completely safe and comfortable for both parties.
Hygiene is fundamental, so cleaning the dog's paws before bedtime is necessary. For animals with long fur, it's a good idea to brush them before bed. The dog should also have a safe place to sleep — unless it finds a spot in the corner of the bed where it can easily get off. Alternatively, placing a dog bed in the corner of the bedroom will allow the pet to see the owners while sleeping in its place.
