Decoding dishwashing sponges: What each colour means

Despite being common in homes, dishwashing sponges have secrets related to their colours. Each shade suggests a different use, which can significantly affect how various surfaces are cleaned.

Although dishwashing sponges may seem like products with identical functions at first glance, they differ in their intended purpose. The sponge's colour indicates in which situations it is best to use it.

Which sponge to choose?

If you've never thought about it before, pay more attention from now on. Dishwashing sponges come in several colours, indicating whether they are designed for tougher or lighter cleaning. Green is the toughest among them, which will remove the most stubborn dirt. However, it should be handled carefully because it can scratch the dish's surface.

What about glasses, wine glasses, or porcelain? These items often cannot (and should not) be washed in the dishwasher. They require gentle hand cleaning.

In this case, dishwashing sponges in yellow and blue work best. The yellow sponge is excellent for glasses and wine glasses, while the blue one, considered the most delicate of all, is suitable for porcelain and—importantly—pans or roasting pans. Often, these items are heavily scrubbed, leading to surface damage, which shortens their lifespan.
