Cargo ship Amnah capsizes in Istanbul, spurring rescue effort
A cargo ship capsized at the port in Istanbul, with part of the cargo falling into the water. The crew had to jump overboard to save themselves. One person was hospitalized.
The cargo ship Amnah capsized at the Ambarli-Marpot port in Istanbul on December 23 at 3:00 AM Eastern Time. As a result of the incident, some containers fell into the water, and five out of 15 crew members jumped overboard.
The remaining ten people were rescued by rescuers, and one person with minor injuries was hospitalized.
Causes of the accident
The Governor of Istanbul Province, Davut Gul, indicated that the cause of the ship's capsizing might have been improper load balancing. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
The Turkish Ministry of Transport assured that there is no threat to the marine environment.
The Port Authority is conducting actions to remove the containers from the water and raise the ship. Floating barriers have been placed around the site to prevent the containers from being lost.
