On Tuesday evening in Southport, several hundred people gathered near the site where the attack had occurred the previous day. The demonstrators wanted to honour the killed and injured children and their caregivers with a minute of silence.
Initially, a peaceful protest got out of control—reports the BBC. Masked individuals started throwing stones, bricks, and bottles at a nearby mosque.
The police had to intervene, and then clashes ensued between the demonstrators and officers. One of the police officers was wounded, and a patrol car was also set on fire.
The police stated that "many" of the aggressive individuals were not residents of the town but people who had arrived there that day.
Stabbing attack in the United Kingdom. Among the victims, children
The attack took place on Monday in Southport, northwestern England. The police were called to the community centre in the afternoon. Officers apprehended a 17-year-old suspect and found a knife, which he likely used to attack the children. Medical services transported the injured to hospitals.
An eyewitness reported seeing bloodied children running out of the community centre, where dance and yoga classes for children aged six to eleven were taking place. Three girls aged six, seven, and nine died. Eight other children and two adults are in hospitals.
