Portugal is sending Kamov Ka-32A11BC helicopters to Ukraine, as reported on the Military News UA profile on the X platform. The report mentions a total of six units, which, according to Army Recognition, Lisbon purchased in 2007 for just under CAD 530 million.

Portugal bought six Kamov Ka-32A helicopters in the 11BC modification in 2007 with the intention of using them for personnel transport and firefighting. However, the authorities had difficulties maintaining them properly, resulting in none of the helicopters being operational as of April 2022, according to Army Recognition.

Problems with portuguese helicopters

The effort to service the machines was hindered because not only was the Russian Kamov maintenance team expelled from Portugal, but the helicopter service centre in Ponte de Sôr was also closed. Given the issues with the machines, in 2022, the then-Portuguese Minister of National Defence, Helena Carreiras, decided to transfer six Kamov Ka-32A11BC units to Ukraine.

Kyiv was informed about the condition of the machines due to component shortages, yet the authorities decided to accept the aid. Portugal has not disclosed the current state of the helicopters or whether they are flight-worthy. However, photos have surfaced online showing the helicopters being prepared for shipment to Ukraine. It is unknown when they will reach the front lines.

The Ka-32A model was introduced by Kamov in 1986 as a medium-sized helicopter and is the civilian version of the military Ka-27PS, which was based on the older Ka-25 and Ka-27 helicopters. It was initially intended for reconnaissance flights over the Arctic, but its utility was expanded during development so that the Ka-32A could undertake missions such as search and rescue, cargo transport, and providing support to allies at sea.

The Ka-32A can accommodate 13 passengers inside or carry a load of up to 11,000 lbs on an external sling. The helicopter measures nearly 41 feet in length and reaches about 18 feet in height with a main rotor width of 52 feet. It is powered by two TV3-117VMA engines, each with an output of 2200 HP. These engines propel the helicopter to speeds of 161 mph. The maximum range of the Ka-32A is 498 miles. Its equipment includes tools for emergency landing as well as various radar and navigational systems that enhance the helicopter's utility during operations.

The Ka-32A11BC version, which Portugal is providing to Ukraine, is distinguished from the base Ka-32A by the presence of a new steering assistance system. It also includes new instrument labels to conform the machine to international standards. According to Army Recognition, this model is primarily used for cargo transport, which is likely how it will be utilized in Ukraine.
