Early Wednesday morning, a truck plowed into a crowd enjoying themselves on Bourbon Street in New Orleans' French Quarter. At least 10 people were killed, and 35 others were injured, according to the latest information.

The Superintendent of the New Orleans Police Department, Anne Kirkpatrick, stated that the man bypassed barricades and sped down Bourbon Street "deliberately" before opening fire on officers. "This man was trying to run over as many people as possible," Kirkpatrick said.

This was not a terrorist event, but we found improvised explosive devices and are investigating if they were operational, said Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Alethea Duncan on Wednesday.

Did the attacker die in a shootout with the police?

Initially, it was unclear what happened to the attacker. However, one federal law enforcement officer informed CNN that the man was dead. CBS News obtained similar information.

It remains unclear what caused the attacker's death. According to sources from the Associated Press, which also cite police sources, the man died in a shootout with officers.
