Activism in old age can take vastly different forms. In Poland, we have the rainbow Grandma Kasia, while across the western border, an antiheroine, a far-right activist, Ursula Haverbeck, known as the Nazi grandma, has gained notoriety.
Ursula Haverbeck is a repeat offender. She gained notoriety by spreading disinformation and denying historical facts. Among other things, she claimed that the Auschwitz camp was merely a labour camp, denied the Holocaust occurred, and persistently refused to acknowledge that Germans committed the mass extermination of Jews. Because of her "appearances," she has faced legal troubles since 2004.
The Nazi grandma in action
The legal history of Ursula Haverbeck is quite extensive. She has received multiple convictions for numerous morally questionable viewpoints, but until recently, she evaded harsher penalties. It wasn't until August 2018 that a court dismissed her appeal against a conviction in Verden. By then, the Nazi grandma already had several fines to pay and 30 months of imprisonment. Each sentence was imposed on her for similar offences.
The 95-year-old Nazi strikes again
The 95-year-old grandma was sentenced again in 2022 - this time to 12 months of imprisonment. The sentence was handed down in a case of denying the mass murder of Jews during the Holocaust. Ursula Haverbeck has not yet started serving this sentence, and more charges are looming on the horizon. The Nazi grandma shows no remorse whatsoever.
She is being prosecuted for her statements made in a television interview on the program "NDR Panorama." The 95-year-old proudly denied the mass extermination of Jews that took place in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Her trial will continue on June 12 and 26, Eastern Time.
