Moscow submerged: Torrential rains paralyze Russian capital
In Moscow, lousy weather is prevailing again. Torrential rains have hit the capital of Russia and the Moscow region. The Department of Transportation called the rainfall "superintense" and reported that the traffic on the Borovsky Highway section had been closed. "City residents are standing waist-deep in a newly formed lake, and cars are slowly sinking to the bottom," describes the portal msk1.ru.

The first recordings of the torrential rains started appearing in the media from the city of Podolsk, south of Moscow. "Podolsk continues to be mercilessly flooded: right now, the disaster is submerging the city center. Stormwater drains can't handle the rain, and quite the opposite, they are supplying a new portion of water. City residents are standing waist-deep in a newly formed lake, and cars are slowly sinking to the bottom..." reads an entry from the portal msk1.ru.
In one of the recordings, a man can be seen swimming towards the apartment blocks in Podolsk.
The downpours also reached the capital of Russia. In western Moscow, the highway was blocked due to flooding. The Russian Department of Transportation called the rainfall "superintense" and reported that because of it, traffic on the Borovsky Highway section had been closed.
The capital's Department of Transportation recommends that "residents and visitors use the metro when travelling around the city in bad weather."
"A perfect sketch of today's apocalypse in New Moscow," writes the Moskwa24 portal.
These are the latest downpours to hit the region. On Thursday, the capital of Russia was hit by "megaraains." In an instant, as much water fell as in a month (roughly 80 litres per square metre). Due to adverse weather conditions, city services continue working intensively. Responsible persons, as well as operational and maintenance personnel, are on duty all day," informed the deputy mayor of Moscow, Pyotr Biryukov, at the time. This occurred around 11:00 a.m. Eastern Time.
