As reported by "The Guardian," on Friday morning, a 61-year-old man was surfing near Waiehu Beach Park when he was attacked by a shark. The shark bit off his right leg just below the knee. Police officers who were first on the scene applied tourniquets to stop the bleeding.

The man was conscious while receiving aid. He was transported in critical condition to Maui Memorial Medical Center. The victim admitted that he did not notice the approaching shark.

After the incident, authorities closed the beach and issued a warning for residents and tourists to avoid entering the water within a radius of 1.6 kilometres from the attack site. The warning is in effect at least until 12:00 p.m. Eastern Time on Saturday and may be extended.

Rescue services are patrolling the surrounding waters using water scooters and drones. State authorities have placed warning signs and secured the area. No information has been provided about the species of shark that attacked the surfer.

This is another serious shark attack in Hawaii this year. In June, well-known surfer Tamayo Perry was killed while surfing off the North Shore of Oahu.
