"During the recent assaults against our brigade, our 2A4 crews performed exceptionally well. We are once again convinced of this weapon's incredible accuracy and firepower," wrote soldiers from the 33rd mechanized brigade of the Ukrainian army.
Leopard 2A4 decimates Russians
Among the NATO tanks delivered to Ukraine, the German Leopards represent the largest group. Most of the units sent to the frontlines are the 2A4 variants, which were manufactured in the late 1980s and early 1990s, representing the pinnacle of tank development from the Cold War era. These tanks were intended to counter the Soviet T-72B and T-80 tanks and, over the years, became part of the equipment of many NATO armies.
Capabilities of the Leopard 2A4 tank
Although the over-30-year-old Leopard 2A4 has several shortcomings compared to the latest tanks, it still poses a real threat to the enemy. These German machines' capabilities are well-regarded by not only Ukrainians but also by soldiers from NATO countries, who emphasize the Leopard 2A4's good mobility and advanced fire control system with thermal imaging.
The Leopard 2A4 is equipped with a 120 mm Rheinmetall L/44 smoothbore cannon, two 7.62 mm machine guns, and a smoke grenade launcher. It also features an automatic fire suppression system and is powered by an engine with 1500 horsepower, allowing the crew to reach speeds of up to 70 km/h.
Although its armour was improved compared to older versions, the Leopard 2A4 lags behind newer NATO tanks. For this reason, the Ukrainians are fitting many units with additional Kontakt-1 reactive armour blocks. This solution enhances resistance to attacks using anti-tank-guided missiles.
