Kamala Harris has a five-point lead over Donald Trump in the latest presidential poll commissioned by ABC News.

According to the ABC News poll, Kamala Harris can count on 50% of all votes, while former President Donald Trump stands at 45%. The previous poll by the station was conducted when the Democratic candidate for the highest office in the USA was the current president, Joe Biden.

In that poll, Donald Trump had a slight lead of one percentage point.

The Democratic convention begins

The National Democratic Party Convention will commence in Chicago on Monday evening, during which Kamala Harris will accept the party's nomination for the presidential election in the USA in November. During the event, Democrats want to show unity, but the convention could be disrupted by demonstrations regarding the war in the Gaza Strip.

Thousands of party delegates, celebrities, and journalists from around the world have arrived in Chicago, and during the four days of meetings, discussions, and speeches, speakers will include, among others, President Joe Biden, former President Barack Obama, and the party's candidates for president and vice president, current Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

This year's convention is different from previous ones because, contrary to tradition, there will not be a formal vote to choose the party's candidate for president. That took place at the beginning of August through virtual voting due to state law in Ohio, which set an earlier deadline for nominating a candidate for the election.

The Chicago convention will also be unique due to the situation within the party and President Biden's withdrawal from the re-election race, which was prompted by party elites.

This time, Democrats want to show party unity. Therefore, one of the main points of the first day will be Biden's speech, meant to symbolize "passing the baton" to his successor. Obama will speak on Tuesday, Walz on Wednesday, and Harris on Thursday, officially accepting the party nomination.

During the convention, the party will also formally adopt the election program.
