Heating revolution: Finnish innovation transforms home comfort
About 66 percent of household energy is dedicated to heating. Finnish researchers are unveiling new technology that will cut expenses and boost comfort. The first products are expected to reach the market by next year.
The heating film, popular in modern heating systems, is a revolutionary technology that transforms walls into effective heat sources. As a result, traditional radiators can be replaced by sleek heating panels that distribute heat evenly throughout the room. The film improves interior aesthetics by eliminating visible radiators, allowing for better space utilization and significantly decreasing energy consumption. It's an excellent choice for the colder months, mainly where energy efficiency and thermal comfort are paramount.
Halia system as an innovative heating method
A few years ago, the Finnish army collaborated with the National Research and Development Centre VTT to develop "decoys" for quickly heating large spaces to confuse the enemy. Engineers completed this task and realized that similar technology could benefit homes and offices.
The result of this endeavour is the Halia system. It is based on a film with a low-voltage heating element. Its slim profile allows installation in almost any material, from walls to furniture and fabrics. This film does not restrict interior design possibilities; in fact, it opens up new opportunities.
What is the halia system and how does it work?
The Halia system uses less energy and quickly heats rooms because the film covers a significant area of the wall surface.
Reaching the desired temperature isn't instantaneous, like flipping a light switch, but it only takes a few seconds, explains Jani-Mikael Kuusisto from The Warming Surfaces Company.
Such "on-demand heating" can also be connected to motion sensors that activate the system when someone enters the room. This way, energy isn't wasted heating empty spaces while maintaining the proper temperature, which provides convenience.
When can you use the system?
The Warming Surfaces Company confirms that production is ready and the first available products. The startup's representatives highlight the technology's high scalability (for the furniture and construction industry) and low production costs due to minimal material usage.
Collaborating with furniture and building material providers further simplifies the system's installation.
