Greenland at the heart of geopolitical tug‑of-war
The international dispute over Greenland intensifies as Russia seeks to involve itself in the American-Danish conflict. A Russian lawmaker suggested on state television that Greenland should be divided, proposing negotiations with Trump to split the island into sections. The lawmaker also hinted at a comparable approach for the Svalbard archipelago.
Donald Trump's remarks about Greenland continue to reverberate. The U.S. president-elect stated at a press conference that the USA needs the island for the country's economic security. He did not dismiss the possibility that the United States might use force to acquire Greenland from Denmark.
Trump thus sparked an international scandal. The Axios portal reported that Danish authorities are holding talks with Donald Trump's team about Greenland's security.
Russian politicians are beginning to address the issue. The island has been of interest to authorities in Moscow for years. The Kremlin would like to acquire Greenland for geopolitical and economic reasons. Donald Trump's words have brought the issue back into focus in Russian propaganda media.
Does Russia need Greenland? Russian politician says so
Russian lawmaker Andrei Gurulev stated outright that "Russia undoubtedly needs Greenland" and proposed dividing the island.
We need Greenland, no joke. At the very least, we could make a deal with Trump and split Greenland into a couple of pieces. It is clear that Denmark will never be there again. Svalbard is also extremely important to us. There will be some very nice [Russian] bases, said Gurulev.
Gurulev's words were listened to with interest by guests in the studio, including Vladimir Solovyov.
Solovyov approved of transforming any defensive strategy into an offensive one, summarizing the Russian lawmaker's remarks from this perspective.
