Exploring Japan's secret to well-being: The power of sencha tea

The culture of tea drinking in Japan offers enjoyment far beyond what we might experience in Canadian households. To be inspired by these flavours, consider trying one of the most popular beverages from the Land of the Rising Sun: green tea matcha. Green tea matcha stands out not only for its taste but also for its health advantages.

Recently, matcha has gained immense popularity, making its way into cafes and various baked goods. However, in Japan, it often takes a backseat to sencha, a tea that has been integral to their culture for centuries. Unsurprisingly, Sencha has made its mark in folk medicine, owing to its numerous health benefits, which appeal to more than just the Japanese.

The healthiest tea

The production of sencha differs from other green teas. After harvesting, the leaves undergo a steaming process that halts oxidation, preserving their intense green colour and rich nutrients. The leaves are then dried and rolled uniquely, giving them a delicate, needle-like appearance.

Sencha's taste is mildly sweet, with noticeable hints of grass and nuts, and its aroma is often described as fresh and floral. Enthusiasts can even discern differences in the tastes of tea from various plantations. The most exclusive is known as Ichibancha, which is harvested from the season's first plucking.

Properties of sencha

The Japanese have consumed this tea for centuries, contributing to their renown for longevity. Considering the properties of green sencha tea, it can be concluded that it significantly aids in maintaining good health. Sencha is rich in polyphenols, effectively combating free radicals, slowing aging, and protecting cells from damage. Including green tea in your diet can reduce the risk of developing cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative conditions.

This modest beverage is also an excellent ally in a weight-loss plan. Thanks to its catechin content, sencha boosts metabolism and helps maintain a healthy weight. It also assists in regulating blood sugar levels, which is especially beneficial for people with diabetes or insulin resistance.

For health and beauty

Sencha's abundance of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants makes it effective in strengthening the body's immunity and shielding against infections. It is also beneficial for heart health, aiding in lowering blood pressure, improving circulation, and reducing bad cholesterol levels in the blood.

Effective regulation of blood sugar levels also helps reduce body fat, making it a great addition to a healthy, balanced diet and a boost for the body.

How to brew sencha?

It's crucial to remember that all its nutritious properties can be lost if the tea is steeped in boiling water. This releases tannins, resulting in a predominantly unpleasant, bitter flavour. The optimal temperature for brewing green tea, especially sencha, is around 70-80 degrees Celsius (160-175 degrees Fahrenheit). You can preserve the delicate taste and aroma at this temperature while extracting the full health benefits.
