In recent years, Egypt received a proposal from the Russian Federation to purchase the Ilyushin Il-76 aircraft. However, Cairo decided to choose the Russian machine's competitor, the American Lockheed C-130J, according to the Bulgarian Military portal. The decision was announced during the Egypt International Air Show, which concluded on September 5 in El Alamein.

Cairo is increasing the capabilities of its transport aviation. Two more machines will join Egypt's arsenal, which already includes Lockheed C-130J-30 Super Hercules aircraft.

Egypt to buy two American C-130J aircraft

Aside from the American machines, Egypt also has aircraft produced by the Russian defence industry, namely the Ilyushin Il-76. According to the Bulgarian Military, two of these types of units in the Egyptian armed forces come from Jordan. Recently, Cairo had the opportunity to expand its arsenal with additional such machines. The Russians offered Egypt the opportunity to purchase the Il-76, but Cairo chose the competitor from the USA – the C-130J aircraft.

Bulgarian Military notes that this decision was primarily driven by the fact that the Egyptian air force already operates American aircraft, making integration with newer designs a natural decision. This will result in simpler crew training and easier maintenance of the machines. The relationship between Egypt and the USA also plays a significant role. Purchasing the American aircraft will strengthen ties with Western allies.

American aircraft for transporting soldiers and equipment

The Lockheed C-130J is the latest version of the popular Hercules transport aircraft, which debuted in 1956. This aircraft is known for its versatility, durability, and reliability, making it used in many countries worldwide. The Lockheed C-130J was introduced into service in 1999 and has since undergone numerous modifications that have increased its capabilities.

The Lockheed C-130J is equipped with four Rolls-Royce AE 2100 D3 engines, which allow it to reach a maximum speed of about 660 km/h and a range of 3,860 kilometres. In the basic C-130J variant, the aircraft measures nearly 30 metres in length, over 40 metres in wingspan, and almost 12 metres in height.

The Lockheed C-130J stands out with its advanced avionics, including flight management systems, autopilot, and modern electronic displays. These systems significantly facilitate aircraft piloting and increase reliability in difficult weather conditions.

The Lockheed C-130J is available in several versions, adapted to different tasks. The C-130J-30 version has an extended fuselage, which increases its transport capacity. Meanwhile, the KC-130J and EC-130J versions serve as aerial refuers and electronic warfare aircraft. Each of these versions was designed to meet the specific operational needs of contemporary armed forces.
