The stench emanating from the sink drain is a common problem that can significantly disrupt home life. Few people, however, know that you can combat it with laundry pods.

Moisture, food scraps, and a lack of proper ventilation promote the growth of bacteria, which are the leading cause of sink odours.

Many of us reach for strong chemicals to combat this issue, which, while effective, can be harmful to the environment and household health. Is there an alternative that is both effective and safe? It turns out there is!

Throw a laundry pod into the sink

Although many chemical pipe cleaners are available on the market, they are not always the best choice. Their intense smell, corrosive properties, and potential environmental threats mean more and more people are looking for alternative methods.

An interesting and little-known way to eliminate bad sink odours is to use a laundry pod. Why exactly? The pod detergents have degreasing and disinfecting properties that excellently handle the removal of grime and bacteria lodged in the pipes. How do you do it?

  • Place the pod on the drain strainer — one laundry pod is enough to effectively clean the drain.
  • Pour boiling water — the hot water will dissolve the pod, and the resulting detergent solution will effectively remove germs and food residues from inside the pipes.
  • Repeat the process — if necessary, the procedure can be repeated for even better results.

However, it's worth noting that this method is not effective for a clogged drain. More invasive methods, such as specialized unblocking agents, may be necessary if the issue involves accumulated residues that block water flow.

Proper maintenance is key

  • Regular drain cleaning: clean the drain of food scraps and grease at least once a month. You can use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar, which also effectively eliminates bacteria.
  • Avoid pouring grease down the sink: hot oil and fat quickly harden in cool pipes, contributing to clogs and unpleasant odours.
  • Protect the drain from food scraps: use a filter on the drain to catch larger food residues, preventing them from entering the pipes.
