Canary Islands brace for record-breaking tourist surge

The Canary Islands are expecting a record number of tourists this summer season. It’s one of the most popular destinations practically all year round due to its great weather and moderate temperatures, except in the summer.

The Canary Islands have seen tourism steadily growing since mid-2022, following the end of coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

According to Traveldata monitoring, the prices of trips offered by the largest tour operators to Tenerife have recently dropped by approximately CAD $61.

The latest data was also published by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE), which presented a preliminary report on border tourism statistics (Frontur) and tourism expenditure surveys (Egatur).

In the first four months of the year, foreign tourists increased by 11.4 percent compared to last year, reaching 5.46 million visitors to this paradise archipelago.

This means the Canary Islands have already welcomed over 622,000 more foreigners than in the same period in 2023. If there are no unexpected events, the archipelago estimates that this year, over 17 million people are expected to vacation on all eight islands, surpassing the current record from 2023, which was 16.2 million.

The National Institute of Statistics also calculated that in April 2024 alone, foreign tourists' expenditures in the Canary Islands amounted to CAD $2.56 billion, 8.1 percent more than in the same month in 2023. This resulted from the higher number of people visiting the archipelago and higher individual expenditures.
