Caffeine as sunblock: Pioneering study unveils protective potential
Caffeine, found in coffee and tea, offers numerous benefits: it enhances concentration, elevates mood, boosts metabolism, and aids in combating migraines. Researchers have also found that it can shield the skin from UV radiation, which reduces the risk of melanoma.

Skin cancer symptoms are varied and often visible. They include unusual redness and halos around moles. Ulceration and itching frequently occur, along with other skin changes.
Does caffeine counteract skin cancer? Surprising research findings
Research indicates that directly applying caffeine to the skin affects the ATR enzyme and aids in protection against skin cancer. In New Jersey, studies on genetically modified mice with reduced levels of the ATR gene yielded surprising results. When exposed to UV light, mice with less active ATR developed fewer tumours.
- Caffeine promotes the death of DNA-damaged cells by inhibiting the ATR pathway and raising p53 levels (these are biological effects). Lowering ATR activity levels helps prevent UVB-induced cancer development. Caffeine acts like a "sunscreen," because it absorbs UVB. All these actions contribute to preventing cancer cell development, according to Dr. Allan Conney. He also mentioned that further research is planned to determine caffeine's effect on skin condition more accurately.
Experts advise the use of creams with SPF 15 or higher and avoid the sun during peak hours. Additionally, tanning beds should be avoided, as this reduces the risk of skin cancer. Exposure to artificial rays is very harmful.
