Trump's strategy for Ukraine: Economic pressure on Russia

According to Peter Doran, an expert from the Washington think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies, President Trump is committed to establishing lasting peace in Ukraine. However, the expert emphasized in an interview with the Polish Press Agency that strong economic pressure on Russia is essential to achieve this peace.

Peter Doran, an expert from the Washington think tank Foundation for Defense of Democracies, believes that President Trump is working towards lasting peace in Ukraine. A key element of this process will be increasing economic pressure on Russia.

Doran points out that Russia is economically weakened, making it susceptible to additional sanctions. He proposes imposing them on financial institutions supporting Russian trade and increasing arms supplies to Ukraine. This strategy is meant to force Putin to choose peace.

The expert discusses the conditions for lasting peace for Ukraine: "Pressure on Russia is needed"

There is currently no agreement on the table, not even the outlines of one. The peace process is still in the exploratory phase. President Trump is trying to find out what both sides are willing to concede and what they do not want to retreat from, as well as how to ensure that Russia will not attack Ukraine again in a few years, Doran emphasized.

Doran recalled that in 2014, there were already European peace talks in Minsk. European leaders failed to reverse Russia's actions, and, as it turned out in 2022, failed to stop them.

According to Doran, President Trump has no intention of abandoning Europe but wants to establish peace in Ukraine. This process remains in the exploratory phase.

The recognition, according to the expert, is also being conducted by Putin. Putin is testing President Trump to see how much he can obtain from him. However, if he experiences firsthand that there are painful consequences for evasions and attempts to manipulate the peace process, there is a chance for positive negotiation outcomes, says Peter Doran in an interview with PAP.

Doran emphasizes that creating a coalition of countries ready to support Ukraine is crucial. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Sweden have already declared their willingness to send troops. Such a coalition aims to prevent violations of peace agreements.
