The Indian Air Force is preparing to add the initial Tejas Mk1A fighter jets to its inventory. At the Aero India 2025 exhibition, which ran from February 10-14, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) showcased four of these aircraft. They participated in an air show attended by India’s Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh. This is another example of the country moving away from reliance on Russian weaponry.

Delivery issues

The first contract for the delivery of 73 Tejas Mk1A fighter jets and 10 trainer aircraft was signed in 2021. The $6.5 billion contract stood as India's largest of its kind. Last fall, plans emerged to order an additional 97 aircraft for $7.7 billion. However, due to delivery delays, India is still using outdated Soviet-era MiG-21 fighters.

Delays in the Tejas Mk1A deliveries were caused by issues with the supply of engines from GE Aerospace. The four aircraft that participated in the show were fitted with engines from a previous agreement. Conflict between HAL management and Air Force Commander, Marshal Amar Prith Singh, also affected the situation, with Singh expressing a lack of trust in HAL.

The future of Indian aviation

Despite the difficulties, India plans to continue investing in the development of its aviation sector. Introducing the Tejas Mk1A aims to modernize the fleet and increase independence from foreign suppliers. It has been reported that India is interested in purchasing American F-35s and other advanced military technologies.

The country faces the challenge of modernizing its air fleet, crucial for its national security. Introducing the Tejas Mk1A is a step toward modernization and enhancing the combat capabilities of the Indian Air Force.
