Bentley bids farewell to iconic W12 for V8 Hybrid future
It was to be expected. After 21 years of service, the powerful twelve-cylinder engine is becoming obsolete. It will be replaced by a smaller engine accompanied by electric power to keep up with current trends.

Since its introduction in 2003, the W12 has been a defining feature of Bentley. Unfortunately, all things must come to an end. There's no room for such engines in an era focused on ecological sustainability and electromobility. In Crewe, a tough decision had to be made in favour of an alternative.
This alternative isn't too disappointing, as it boasts eight cylinders. Yet, it doesn't bring anything novel to the table. The turbocharged four-litre engine, or EA825, is a popular choice among other Volkswagen Group brands, including Bentley. Now, it's set to receive several enhancements and hybrid support.
With these improvements, it will achieve as much as 750 hp – 90 hp more than the retiring W12. The performance is unsurprising yet impressive. From an ecological standpoint, the new powertrain also shines, offering a range of up to 90 kilometres on electric power alone. Bentley hasn't disclosed the battery's size, but it's likely to be around 25.9 kWh, similar to Porsche's.
While it's still unclear which model will first feature the V8 hybrid, it's expected to become a staple. Interestingly, this isn't the brand's initial venture into plug-ins. Bentley already offers the Flying Spur a 2.9-litre V6 supported by electric power.
