Fans of Young Thug can celebrate—after a long imprisonment, the rapper is finally free. His legal battle with the Georgia court was extremely protracted. The case began in 2022, and Thugger had been in custody since January 2023. The list of charges against the rapper was extensive: if found guilty of all the alleged actions, he would have faced a total sentence of 120 years imprisonment.
Young Thug was arrested for violating the RICO Act concerning conducting and participating in an illegal criminal organization. Besides the rapper, several other individuals were also detained. One of them, Gunna, was released very swiftly.
Thugger faced charges, including possession of weapons, drugs, and criminal activity. The most serious allegation was that the music label YSL (Young Stoner Life Records) functioned as a criminal organization, a claim that was not proven.
Sentenced to 40 years. Young Thug returns home
The rapper ultimately decided to settle with the court. He received a 40-year prison sentence, but it was reduced. Young Thug was released after serving just over two years in prison—he was supposed to serve five but was treated with exceptional leniency. Following his release, the artist will begin a 15-year probationary period. If he violates the settlement terms, he will return to prison for 20 years without the possibility of appeal. Young Thug has committed to:
- not leaving Atlanta (except under exceptional circumstances),
- performing 100 hours of community service annually,
- not promoting criminal activity,
- not associating with known gang members (with two exceptions to the ban: his brother Unfoonk and Gunna, who is signed to his label),
- undergoing unannounced drug tests,
- conducting annual presentations warning children about gangs.
