According to sources cited by Reuters, resuming contact between Trump and Kim could reduce the risk of military confrontation and restore communication channels. However, specific political goals or timelines for possible progress have not yet been established.
Reuters' sources acknowledge that negotiations with Pyongyang may become less of a priority due to more pressing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
Trump boasted about his relationship with Kim
During the election campaign, Trump repeatedly emphasized his good relations with the North Korean leader, claiming that it is "a good thing, not a bad thing." He also criticized President Joe Biden for not meeting with Kim, despite the White House expressing a willingness to talk without preconditions.
Trump was the first U.S. president since Bill Clinton to meet with the North Korean leader. He held three meetings with him: in Hanoi, Singapore, and in the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas. Despite exchanging letters, which Trump called "love letters," these contacts did not yield concrete results, and North Korea continued to develop its missile and nuclear programs.
A key organizer of the Trump-Kim summits was State Department official Alex Wong, who was appointed Deputy National Security Advisor of the USA.
Reuters notes that Pyongyang's media have not yet mentioned Trump's election victory, and Kim Jong Un has accused the USA of increasing tensions and the risk of nuclear war.
