Window seat standoff: Passenger stands firm against family's request
One of the passengers described a situation on a Reddit forum where he refused to give his window seat to a six-year-old girl. The man specifically reserved this seat to enjoy the view during the flight.
When a family with a daughter boarded the plane, the passengers were already seated. The father had an aisle seat, the mother a middle seat, and the girl was supposed to sit in the next aisle seat.
When the child realized she would not be sitting by the window, she started crying and demanding the passenger's seat.
The child's parents tried to force a seat exchange
At first, the parents tried to calm their daughter, but to no avail. Finally, the father asked the man to switch seats. The passenger politely declined, explaining that he had reserved the window seat to enjoy the view.
The girl's father said that "it would be nice" to give up the seat and that "it wouldn't hurt him." However, the man stuck to his decision, believing that a child's whim was not a sufficient reason to change seats.
The girl cried for 10 minutes until her mother calmed her down with a tablet. The passenger, however, felt tension for the rest of the flight. He occasionally noticed critical glances from the parents. Upon landing, he heard the mother say, "some people just have no heart."
Internet users supported the traveller in his decision
The traveller admitted that despite some doubts, he believes he made the right decision. Many Reddit users supported him in the comments. "It's not your responsibility to accommodate someone's poor planning or a child's whim," – wrote one of them.
Others emphasized that parents should not teach children that through tantrums they can force others to fulfil their demands. "You weren't rude or disrespectful, you just stuck to your right to the seat you reserved" – commented another user.
